Fractures, Sprains and Strains

Colles FractureFractures are a break or disruption of a bone. Fractures can involve any bone in the human skeleton, which is made up of 206 bones in a typical human skeleton. There are many types and severities of fractures, for example:

• Complete
• Incomplete
• Open/Compounded
• Closed/Simple
• Comminuted
• Pathological

• Greenstick
• Impacted
• Oblique
• Spiral
• Stress Fracture




Ankle SprainSprains/Strains
are injuries to the ligaments and/or tendons, causing them to stretch or partially or completely tear as a result of a sudden trauma or injury. Sprain and strains are very common among athletes and active individuals. There are three degrees of sprains/strains:

• First degree - Mild
• Second degree - Moderate
• Third degree - Severe

Symptoms of fractures and/or sprains/strains:

• Swelling
• Localized pain
• Internal/External bleeding

• Unable to move or bear weight on extremity
• Stiffness/Lack of motion
• Bruising


Treatment
— Depending on the severity of your injury, treatments could include ice/elevation, stabilization with cast, splint, walking boot, physical therapy and surgical intervention.
