Sports Medicine at COS: From Elite Athletes to Weekend Warriors

Sports Medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with injuries or illnesses resulting from participation in sports and athletic activities.

At COS, our sports medicine team consists of six orthopedic surgeons and two pain management physicians with each physician having extensive experience in sports medicine.

Sports medicine encompasses anyone who is physically active from the young athlete to the active older adult.

  • Children, adolescents, high school, college, and professional athletes
  • "Weekend warriors" – recreationally active individuals
  • Aging athletes – active individuals fighting the affects past injuries, arthritis or rehabbing current debilitating conditions

Treatment available to sports medicine patients includes:

  • Assessment, examination, and treatment plan from a sports medicine specialist
  • All necessary diagnostic imaging (MRI, X-ray)
  • Casting, splinting and bracing
  • Referral to physical therapy / rehabilitation
  • Surgery if needed

At COS we treat a full range of sports injuries, including arthroscopic and surgical management of the knee such as:

  • anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and cartilage tears
  • sports-related shoulder trauma (rotator cuff tears and instability)
  • wrist, elbow and ankle fractures and sprains
  • overuse injuries of the lower extremity (groin, hamstring, patellofemoral, iliotibial band, shin splints, Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis and stress fractures).
