Cast Care Information

Bathing instructions – non-waterproof

  • Use a plastic bag over the cast, wrap the ends with Saran Wrap® to prevent water getting into your cast
  • Contact the office should your cast get wet.
  • If you have a waterproof cast and have been in any water other than bath water you must rinse your cast with CLEAN water to remove any chemical, dirt, etc. Let the cast drain, and if need be to aid in the process a blow dryer on cool may be used.

Preventing infections:

  • Do not put ANYTHING down your cast as this may result in abrasions or sores thus causing a breeding ground for bacteria.

  • To relieve use a blow dryer set on low ( cool). Run it along the cast. The cast is porous allowing the air to flow. This will also help decrease odor.

Follow the instructions given to you by your doctor, i.e. weight bearing status , activity level, ice and elevation.

Be sure to contact your doctor if you have any problems with your cast, such as

  • Persistent pain
  • Swelling not relieved with ice and elevation
  • Skin discoloration or temperature
  • Loss of motion in fingers/toes
  • Foul odor
  • Too loose or tight
